Does your child:
- Face bullying?
- Need a confidence boost?
- Benefit from camaraderie and a sense of belonging?
- Prefer activities beyond traditional sports?
If so, then they are a great candidate for youth Jiu-Jitsu at Phoenix Fitness and Martial Arts. Many kids have benefited immensely from our youth BJJ program by gaining confidence and self-esteem while improving their fitness level.
Our youth Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program is designed for children ages 8-16 and is equally suitable for both boys and girls. Around age 15 they can begin transitioning to our adult jiu jitsu classes.
Through Jiu-Jitsu, kids master the art of restraining attackers without causing injury to themselves or their opponent. Your child can learn to defend themselves without throwing a punch. If they ever need to use their skills, they will earn long-lasting respect from bullies while being less likely to get in trouble for fighting.
Jiu-Jitsu also provides powerful health benefits. It’s a very physical activity which will help them build strength and endurance while burning off energy.
Is Youth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Right For Your Child?
Meet the kids whose lives were re-shaped through Jiu-Jitsu
Myles was 13 when he started training Jiu-Jitsu at Phoenix. He was a very tall and lanky kid. On the first day he stepped foot inside the gym he carried himself without confidence. He walked with his head down and his hands in his pockets. He wouldn’t look anyone in the eye and when asked a question he replied in a sheepish tone.
Myles was getting bullied by some of the bigger kids in school. His parents resolved to give him the tools to no longer be a victim. They wanted to set him up to grow into a confident young man.
They enrolled him in our Jiu-Jitsu program and we saw his confidence skyrocket. He began to stand taller. He spoke with more vigor and smiled more often. He was attacked by the bullies a month into training and he effortlessly fended them off. The bullies never looked his way again.
Myles came back to visit years later and thanked us for changing his life. We were ecstatic to see the strong and happy young man he had become.
Deana was 10 years old when she started training Jiu-Jitsu with us. She hadn’t shown interest in sports and she was small for her age. Her mom worried about her safety and thought she’d benefit from physical activity.
Fortunately, the techniques taught in Jiu-Jitsu work fantastically for smaller people. Deanna quickly fell in love with the sport. She soon discovered that Jiu-Jitsu techniques equipped her to handle the bigger kids in class. She became enamored with Jiu-Jitsu and practiced all the time. She became a class standout and even competed in her first tournament that year.
Deana’s story is a testament that martial arts aren’t just for boys. The techniques allow a small person to fend off a stronger attacker. Many girls in our youth Jiu-Jitsu program dominate their male counterparts in sparring sessions!
What will your child need to get started?
We start everyone with private 1-1 lessons. This allows them a safe, supportive way to learn the basics and build a strong relationship with their instructor before jumping into a class with other experienced students. Once they are comfortable with the techniques and terminology they can move into the group classes or continue with 1-1 training if that works better for them.
A uniform (called a “gi”) is required to practice Jiu-Jitsu in this program. We offer loaner gis for first timers so they get to experience Jiu-Jitsu before investing in gear, and after that they can either purchase one from us or we will offer recommendations for where to buy them online.
Parents are welcome to stay and watch their kids practice Jiu-Jitsu or they can take advantage of nearby Short Pump Town Center to knock out some errands during the one-hour practice.
